As I write this blog, tropical storm Olivia is approaching the Hawaiian islands. It looks like there’s no chance of this storm passing us by, like the recent 3 or 4 storms have done. Everyone in Hawaii is so very grateful that Olivia went from a category 3 hurricane to a tropical storm before its arrival.
As the blue skies and calm winds start to shift to gray, rainy, and gusty, we all wonder what Olivia will bring. You never really know. Island folks are still preparing for the worst, just in case. Water, flashlights, batteries, generators, and extra pet food are a must. Many families already have their emergency plans in place and kits stocked up from the last storm.

Tropical weather always amazes me. One hour it’s perfect; blue sky, puffy white clouds, and trade winds gently blowing, keeping the humidity bearable. The next hour (or less) the winds are gusting from another direction and the crystal clear blue sky has turned gray and rainy.
The unpredictability of the weather from area to area can be a challenge for anyone driving around in a convertible, but it’s what makes Hawaii so lush and beautiful. I often tell our Kihei Rent A Car customers, “If the weather is not how you like it where you are, drive 10-15 minutes and you will find different conditions.” Well, that advice doesn’t apply when a tropical storm is in the neighborhood. In the case of a storm, seek shelter if advised to do so. Preferably in a great restaurant.
