Weather on Maui

We often are asked what the weather is like during certain months of the year here in Maui. Although we can’t predict the weather of the future since Mother Nature has a mind all her own, we can tell you what Maui weather is typically like throughout the year. This may help you plan for your next trip to Maui.

Summary of Average Monthly Weather for Maui Hawaii

January
Maui does have a winter, which is characteristically a bit cooler and rainier than the other seasons. January is one of the coolest months. Cold fronts come in from the Northwest which brings in rain, making January the wettest month of the year. Storms may come through. However, balmy weather does prevail between these periods of showers. The tradewinds do not blow as often as during the summer months, which also causes precipitation. In fact, tradewinds in January blow only 42% of the time, compared with July’s 95%. Rather large surf can be found on the North and West shores. Sea water temperature averages about 75 degrees F.
January average temperatures on Maui: 82-64 F. (27.8 C-17.8 C)
Daytime sunshine on Maui: 69%

February – This is also a cool month, with showers mixed in with warm, and sunny days. The tradewinds blow a bit more often in February with an average of 55% of the time. There is still medium to high surf found on the North and West shores. Sea water temperature averages about 74 degrees F.

March – Temperatures are a bit warmer than February with more Northeast tradewinds blowing on the average of 61% of the time. These tradewinds bring showers to the windward sides of the island, but with less winter storm action, especially at the tail end of the month. Surf is still good on the North and West shores. Sea water temperature averages about 74 degrees F.
March average temperatures on Maui: 83-64 F. (28.3 C-17.8 C)

April – Spring has arrived, with the beginning of the flowering Jacaranda trees in Upcountry Maui. Winter storms are rare in this month. The trade wind blows more frequently now until the month of October which brings mild weather. The tradewinds blow 74% of the time on average. There is lots of sunshine to be found in the leeward areas of the island, with cloudiness on the windward areas. Sea water temperature averages about 75 degrees F.
April average temperatures: 84-65 F. (28.9 C-18.3 C)
Daytime sunshine on Maui: 56%

May – Such a beautiful month, you will think Summer has arrived early! May can typically be a warm month, with tradewinds blowing most of the time to keep us comfortable, 86% of the time. There are less clouds and rain in May compared to April. The winter storms are gone. Sea water temperature averages about 76 degrees F. (25.6C)
May average temperatures on Maui: 85-67 F. (28.9 C-18.3 C)
Daytime sunshine on Maui: 58%

June – Summer has definitely arrived, with warm and sunny days all over the island. Tradewinds blow 91% of the time in June, nearly everyday, which brings much drier conditions. Rain is rare. This month also marks the beginning of the hurricane season; however, it’s not likely for a hurricane to brew in June. Sea water temperature averages about 77 degrees F.

July – Thank God for the tradewinds, which keep us cool and refreshed in this hot Summer month. Tradewinds blow nearly 95% of the time during July. Very rarely, a tropical storm may come which brings with it no winds and high humidity, which can be a little uncomfortable, especially for low-lying areas of the island. Surf has now moved to the South facing shores from Lahaina to Wailea, with small -medium size waves. Sea water temperature averages about 78 degrees F.

August – Typically, not a cloud in the sky with tradewinds fanning the island 94% of the time. Sometimes, the tradewinds may stall if there is a tropical storm nearby which brings with it uncomfortably high humidity to low-lying areas of the island. Sea water temperature averages about 79 degrees F.
August average temperatures on Maui: 88-69 F. (31.1 C-20.6 C)
Daytime sunshine on Maui: 73%

September – September is probably the hottest month of the year. Hurricanes and tropical storms may begin to brew up some high humidity by causing the tradewinds to stall. Although hurricanes very seldom reach the shores of Maui, we do feel the effect of the mugginess they produce. Tradewinds blow on the average 83% of the time. Sea water temperature averages about 80 degrees F.
September average temperatures on Maui Lahaina 89-70 F. (31.7 C-21.1 C)
Daytime sunshine on Maui: 62%

October – This month is still dry and mild with temperatures beginning to be less intense than the Summer months, but still with beautiful sunny weather and little rain. The tradewinds begin to slow down a little, blowing 71% of the time. For surf, you may see your first big waves coming in on the North shore, being produced by some early winter storms brewing in the North Pacific sea. Sea water temperature averages about 79F degrees
October average temperatures on Maui Lahaina 88-69 F. (31.7 C-20.6 C)
Daytime sunshine on Maui: 60%

November – This month tends to be a mishmash of both Summer and Winter weather, being a month of transition into the Winter weather pattern. You may see some showers that are caused by clod fronts coming in from the North and NW during tail-end of the month. You will also to see rather large surf on the North shores, especially during the end of the month, and on into the rest of the Winter months. Temperatures tend to cool down quite a bit, from the upper 80’s down to the middle 80’s. This is also the beginning of the rainy season, with tradewinds blowing 64% of the time. Sea water temperature averages about 77F degrees
November average temperatures on Maui: 86-67 F. (30.0 C-19.4 C)
Daytime sunshine on Maui: 67%

December – Winter has arrived to Maui with frequent cold fronts which bring showers and winter storms, along with days of sunshine and balmy weather. Surf is very good on the North and West shores with medium to large sized waves. Tradewinds are blowing on the average 57% of the time. Sea water temperature averages about 76 degrees F. December is typically the wettest month of the year on Maui.
