Maui OnStage is presenting Come From Away at Wailuku’s historic ʻĪao Theater—a heartfelt Broadway sensation that transforms real-life kindness into art. From July 4–27, catch weekend performances Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m.
The show recounts the astonishing events of September 11, 2001, when 38 planes, carrying nearly 7,000 passengers, were suddenly grounded in Gander, Newfoundland. In the face of uncertainty, the tight-knit locals welcomed strangers with open arms, doubling their town’s population in an instant. It’s a story of compassion, community, and hope—celebrated with Tony and Olivier wins—including Best Direction on Broadway.
On July 12, you won’t want to miss the special post-show event. Kevin Tuerff—the real person behind the character “Kevin T.”—will share his firsthand experience of being stranded in Gander, followed by a “Talk Story” session and book signing. His memoir, Channel of Peace: Stranded in Gander on 9/11, offers a deeply personal reflection on those pivotal moments.
As a community theater, Maui OnStage is also inviting locals to donate gently used suitcases—integral to the set design that brings the Gander airport to life on stage. It’s your chance to be part of a shared journey.
