If you’ve spent any time exploring Maui, you may have spotted the elusive yet ever-present axis deer. While they might look majestic grazing in open fields or darting across the road, their rapidly growing population has become a major problem for local farmers, ecosystems, and even drivers. Now, a new Request for Proposals (RFP) for axis deer control in Maui Nui is aiming to bring balance back to the island.
Why Are Axis Deer a Problem?
Axis deer were introduced to Maui in the 1950s, and with no natural predators, their numbers have exploded into the tens of thousands. These deer are wreaking havoc on agriculture, devouring crops meant for local consumption, destroying native plants, and contributing to erosion, which affects coral reefs and marine life. On top of that, they pose a serious hazard for drivers, often darting across roads unexpectedly, especially at night.
The New RFP: What’s the Plan?
The state is now looking for innovative and humane solutions to control the deer population. This new RFP invites proposals that may include expanded hunting programs, improved fencing, population tracking, and conservation strategies to help mitigate the growing crisis.
What This Means for You
Drive with caution! If you’re renting a car on Maui, be especially careful at dawn and dusk when deer are most active.
Support local farmers. Deer are damaging crops, so buying from local markets helps those impacted.
Stay informed. If you’re a hunter or conservationist, opportunities to help with deer management may be coming soon.
With the right strategies, Maui can restore its natural balance while keeping visitors and locals safe. Stay alert, drive safe, and enjoy the island—deer-free roads are the dream!
