I’m sure you’ve seen white road signs around Maui with blue lettering saying Adopt A Highway. Since 1993 Kihei Rent A Car has been the proud adopter of the last mile of Mokulele Highway before you enter Kihei and the first mile as you leave Kihei.
The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation describes this awesome program as “a public service program for volunteers to pick up litter along Hawaii’s State highways. It’s a way for environmentally conscious citizens to make a contribution to a cleaner State. In addition to a cleaner roadside, participants help to prevent pollutants from entering our storm drains, streams, and the ocean.”
Adopt-A-Highway groups agree to:
*Adopt a 2 mile portion of state highway for a minimum of 2 years.
*Pick up litter on that highway at lest 4 times per year.
Kihei Rent A Car has cleaned their section weekly for twenty years! Our valuable volunteers, employees, friends and parents of employees, car rental customers, and past employees have worked tirelessly to keep this busy and oftentimes very littered section of the highway clean and beautiful.
Now Kihei Rent A Car is sharing the road – literally. Couch Movers recently contacted us to see if they can help with this huge responsibility. Of course they can! They will now be partners with Kihei Rent A Car to keep a two mile section along Mokulele Highway clean and beautiful. This new partnership is a perfect example that the Adopt-A-Highway program provides a great opportunity to promote civic responsibility, community pride, and camaraderie within AND BETWEEN organizations. We look forward to many years of co-cleaning with our Highway Beautification partner!
