If you’re in Kīhei or planning a visit over Memorial Day weekend, don’t miss a standout cultural event blending world-class jazz with local flavors. On Saturday, May 24, 2025, Jazz Maui and South Maui Learning ʻOhana present “A Musical Tribute to Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month” at The Altitude Deck, 650 Līpoa Parkway.
Doors open at 5 p.m., kicking off with performances by Nā Aliʻi Jazz Combo and Wilmont Kahaialii. The main concert features Grammy-nominated violinist Meg Okura and soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome, joined by local talents Jeff Hellmer (piano), Dave Graber (bass), and Kevin Garland (drums). Together, they’ll perform original compositions and reimagined melodies from Japan, China, and beyond, celebrating AANHPI cultural traditions through jazz.
Enhancing the evening is a festival plate dinner curated by Chef Itara Wood, offering dishes like shoyu chicken, kalua pork, teriyaki mushroom tofu, ʻulu potato-less salad, and beet poke lettuce cups. Attendees may bring their own wine with a $10 corkage fee; non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students (18 and under), with the optional dinner plate available for $30. Seating is limited, so advance purchase is recommended at jazzmaui.org
