Kihei Walking Tour

Join Maui Walking Tours on a guided walk through the history of Kihei. Learn about the Hawaiian community that called this region of South Maui home, the influence of the US military during WWII, and the tourism boom of the 1960s and 1970s. Stories shared on the walk were collected first hand through one-on-one meetings with city architects, historians, authors, county officials, cultural advisors, and families that have lived in Kihei for multiple generations.

Tour Length: 80 minutes (1 mile)

Start Time: We start at 5pm so the tour ends just in time for you to enjoy a Maui sunset over the ocean!

Start Location: Kihei Public Library (sidewalk)

Tour Days: Monday and Wednesday

The tour company’s newest guided walking tour takes participants through the streets of Wailuku sharing stories of its rich history. In addition to highlighting historic landmarks, buildings, and architecture, the tour weaves close to a dozen Wailuku street murals into the route, sharing the history and culture depicted through art.” MauiNow

Wailuku has been Maui’s commercial hub for over a century.  Home to the Maui County Courthouse, original police headquarters, New England inspired churches built by the first missionaries, one of the oldest bowling alley’s in the state, and the charming Iao Theater (placed on the National Register of Historic Places), there are plenty of colorful stories to hear about.

The town of Wailuku has also enjoyed a revitalization of street art over the last decade. Numerous international urban art projects and Maui County initiatives have lead to the creation of more than 30 murals across building facades in Wailuku. Learn about the artists, their inspirations, and the Hawaiian culture/legends depicted in these beautiful murals!

Tour Length: 90 minutes

Start Time: 3 pm

Start Location: Maui State Building Courtyard (corner of Main St. and High St.

Tour Days: Every other Saturday 

Kihei and Wailuku tours are very different from each other, so check them both out. Wailuku is only a 20 minute drive from south Maui.
