As you explore Maui, here’s a special cultural event you won’t want to miss: the Hui Mo‘olelo: Lāhainā Film Festival, returning to ProArts Playhouse in Kīhei on November 29 from 3:30–5:30 p.m.

This free screening features six powerful short animated films — five story-driven animations plus a program film — that bring to life the voices and memories of Lāhainā’s kūpuna (elders). Through the Hui Mo‘olelo project, community storytellers paired with younger generations have preserved treasured stories, turning them into moving art.
Highlights include “The Koa Bench”, narrated by Theo Morrison of the Lāhainā Restoration Foundation, and “Hikari no Michi (Path of Light)”, inspired by Reverend Gensho Hara’s decades of service. There’s also “Ola na Iwi”, a beautiful 14-minute film weaving together multiple family voices in a visual mural of memory.
The gathering isn’t just a film screening — there will be a surprise musical performance and a Q&A to reflect on the stories together. Seating is limited to 120, so arrive early.
Visiting this festival is a meaningful way to connect with the heart and spirit of Lāhainā while you’re here on Maui. If you’re interested, we can help you plan how to get there from your accommodations — just let us know!
