Get ready for an unforgettable weekend as the 18th Annual Kū Mai Ka Hula competition returns to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) on September 12–13. This premier event showcases Maui’s only adult hula competition, featuring award-winning hālau from Hawai‘i, Japan, and the continental U.S.
The festivities kick off on Thursday, September 11, with Designing the ʻAʻahu, a panel discussion at 7:30 p.m. in the McCoy Studio Theater. Local kumu hula will share insights into the artistry and cultural significance behind the dancers’ costumes.
On Friday, September 12, the solo competition begins at 6:00 p.m., followed by the group competition on Saturday, September 13, at 1:00 p.m., both held in the Castle Theater. Each day concludes with an awards ceremony, celebrating the dedication and talent of the performers.
Before the Saturday performances, enjoy pre-show entertainment by the Kamehameha Schools Maui Hawaiian Ensemble at 11:30 a.m. in the Yokouchi Pavilion. Throughout the day, browse displays of locally made products and savor a variety of food and beverages available for purchase.
