We’re excited to share the vibrant transformation at the Kenolio/Alulike intersection through the South Maui Quick‑Build Street Art Project, recently completed by the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization. This initiative marries community-driven design with safety enhancements—and it’s absolutely worth a visit if you’re cruising around Kihei.
The mural uses a dual-theme design inspired by local natural treasures. On the makai side, hues of turquoise to navy reflect the historic Kalepolepo (Ko’ie’ie) Fishpond, with artwork featuring ‘ama’ama (mullet) and awa (milkfish)—species once raised locally On the mauka side, warm golds and browns echo the Kūlanihāko’i wetlands and sand dunes, complete with native flora like pōhuehue, highlighting both cultural and ecological significance.
More than 50 community volunteers helped paint the intersection, bringing together over 100 survey responses and local feedback to complete a piece that’s beautiful, functional, and meaningful. Mayor Kauanoe Batangan of Maui MPO emphasizes that the artwork does more than beautify—it slows traffic, increases road-user awareness, and strengthens community pride.
