Last night, on March 13, 2025, Maui residents and visitors were treated to a spectacular celestial event: a total lunar eclipse, often referred to as a “Blood Moon.” This phenomenon occurs when the Earth aligns directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that gives the lunar surface a reddish hue.
In Hawaii, the eclipse began at 6:20 PM HST, with totality—the phase where the Moon is entirely within Earth’s shadow—occurring between 8:26 PM and 9:31 PM HST. During this period, the Moon appeared 24 degrees above the horizon at the start of totality, rising to 39 degrees by its conclusion.

Skywatchers across the islands gathered at beaches, parks, and open spaces to witness this rare event. The clear Hawaiian skies provided optimal viewing conditions, allowing the Moon’s transformation to be observed in stunning detail. For many, it was a moment of reflection and appreciation of the natural wonders that our universe offers.
