In 1990, Dave and Sugar started Kihei Rent A Car with a dream: to offer affordable rentals and down-to-earth service on Maui. What they didn’t know then was that their business would grow into something even greater—a hub of connection, community, and love.
In the early 1990s, their daughter Marj joined as the company mechanic, keeping the cars running strong. Soon after, daughters Jayne and Lynn joined the family business, helping Kihei Rent A Car expand into the close-knit ohana it is today. With 8 family members and many loyal employees, some of whom have stayed for decades, the business has always been fueled by more than just cars—it’s fueled by people.
And along the way, love stories blossomed. Couples met here, fell in love, and built families of their own.

🚗 Dave & Sugar start Kihei Rent A Car
❤️ Jayne & Todd – Jayne met Todd when he came in as a regular rental car customer. Their connection grew into marriage and two beautiful daughters, Acacia and Sequoia.
❤️ Kristi & Kalani – Sparks flew on the job when Kristi was working as a rental agent and Kalani was busy washing cars. The two built a life together and have a son.
❤️ Leihua & Kerry – Another love story born at work: rental agent Leihua met car washer Kari, and today they’re happily raising two sons together.
❤️ Mikey & Manu – Both rental agents, Mikey and Manu were side by side helping customers when love stepped in. Their teamwork turned into marriage, and now they’re the proud parents of three kids.
❤️ Ryan & Kristi – Sometimes a simple car rental changes everything. When Kristi rented a car after moving to Maui, she met Ryan, one of the co-owners. That chance encounter turned into a love story, and they now share a daughter.
❤️ Acacia & Christian – Even the next generation has their own Kihei Rent A Car connection! Acacia, daughter of Jayne and Todd, met Christian, son of long-time team member Arlene. Their ohana may look a little different—they’re raising two cats and a dog together—but it’s a love story all the same.
