Aloha, Kihei Rent A Car ʻohana!
Looking for a fun, family-friendly weekend activity while you’re cruising around Central Maui? Head on over to beautiful Keōpūolani Regional Park this Saturday and Sunday, June 14–15, to witness Maui artist Jillian Ikehara bringing her breathtaking public art to life as part of the Maui Utility Box Art Project.
This vibrant initiative transforms ordinary utility boxes into colorful canvases rooted in Maui stories. Jillian’s design—born from a Hui Mo‘olelo talk-story between Carol Ball and Erin Wade—reimagines Kahului’s evolution from plantation culture to a future “Dream City 2.0,” emphasizing Native Hawaiian values, walkability, and sustainability.
The park’s utility box is located near the dog park and YMCA parking off Kanaloa Avenue. Stop by anytime between 9 AM–5 PM, bring a lawn chair, sun gear, maybe a cool drink, and watch Jillian paint in real time. Chat with her, learn the story behind the design, and become an ambassador for this living artwork.
At Kihei Rent A Car, we believe there’s so much more to Maui than sandy beaches—it’s the heartbeats of our communities, vibrant culture, and tales told in brush strokes. So pick up a car with us, enjoy the ride, and let the island’s art and aloha inspire your journey.
