This morning, January 10, 2025, many Kihei residents and visitors woke up to an unexpected power outage. Last night’s storm brought heavy rains, gusty winds, and lightning, which caused significant damage to power lines in the area. Hawaiian Electric crews have been working tirelessly since dawn to restore power across the island, with Kihei being one of the hardest-hit regions.
For our Kihei Rent A Car customers, we want to assure you that our office is fully operational, thanks to backup generators. While some services may take slightly longer than usual, our team is here to ensure your rental experience remains smooth.
The outage primarily affected homes and businesses along South Kihei Road and nearby neighborhoods. Traffic lights at key intersections are out, so drivers are reminded to exercise caution and treat intersections as four-way stops. If you’re heading to attractions like Wailea or Makena today, plan for delays and bring plenty of patience.
Despite the inconvenience, there’s always a silver lining. The storm has left behind cooler temperatures and some of the most stunning views of the West Maui Mountains draped in waterfalls. If you’re looking for a silver lining to brighten your day, consider taking a scenic drive in one of our vehicles to enjoy Maui’s refreshed landscape.
While Hawaiian Electric estimates power restoration later today, be sure to check their website or social media for updates. In the meantime, pack some extra water, snacks, and a flashlight if you’re heading out for a full day.
At Kihei Rent A Car, we’re here to help you make the most of your Maui adventure—rain or shine. Stay safe, and mahalo for choosing us for your island travels!
