The first humpback whale sighting of the 2024 season was reported by Teralani Sailing Adventures off the coast of Ka’anapali. Captain Matt Talbot and his crew spotted the whale at around 10 a.m. during a snorkel sail, marking the start of Maui’s whale season. This was the only confirmed sighting so far, and Teralani’s general manager.

Humpback whales migrate annually from Alaska to Hawaii to breed and nurse their young. Although October may seem early for sightings, it’s a regular pattern, with Teralani noting previous first-sighting dates ranging from late September to mid-October in past years. The sighting signals the arrival of more whales in the coming weeks, thrilling both residents and visitors.

 

As whale season kicks off, it’s important to follow the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) guidelines for safe whale watching. These include maintaining a distance of at least 100 yards from the whales, reducing boat speed when whales are present, and limiting time observing them to 30 minutes, especially when calves are involved. These measures ensure that the Maui waters remain a safe environment for the humpbacks to breed and raise their young.

 

With the first whale already spotted, Maui is ready to welcome its annual visitors from the sea.
