If you’re visiting Maui this weekend, Tropical Storm Lala is something to keep on your radar.
Lala is approaching the Hawaiian Islands and is expected to bring periods of heavy rain, strong winds, rough surf and possible flooding to Maui County. The Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency says impacts are expected to progress to Maui Nui on Saturday morning, with rain, wind and rough surf potentially continuing into Sunday.
Maui County is currently under a Tropical Storm Watch, while a Flash Flood Watch is also in effect. The National Weather Service says 8 to 12 inches of rain are possible in upslope and windward areas of Maui, with localized amounts potentially reaching 15 inches.
What Does This Mean for Maui Visitors?
First, don’t panic. Maui’s weather can vary dramatically from one side of the island to another, and forecasts can change as a tropical system approaches.
However, this is a weekend to pay attention to official weather and emergency updates and be flexible with your plans.
Be Extra Careful on the Roads
Heavy rain can quickly create hazardous driving conditions. Flood-prone roads and low-lying areas may close because of runoff or overflowing streams, according to Maui County. Debris, standing water and reduced visibility can also make driving more difficult.
If you’re driving a rental car, slow down, increase your following distance and never drive through moving water. A road that looks passable can become dangerous very quickly.
Stay Away From Rough Ocean Conditions
Lala is expected to bring dangerous surf and strong currents. Even if the weather looks calm where you’re staying, ocean conditions can change quickly.
This weekend may not be the time for snorkeling, surfing or swimming in unfamiliar waters. Check current ocean conditions and follow posted warnings and lifeguard instructions.
Consider a Flexible Weekend
Outdoor adventures may need to wait. Instead, look for indoor museums, shopping, local food experiences and other activities that can be enjoyed safely if conditions become wet or windy.
And remember: some attractions and events may change their schedules because of the storm. Always check directly with the venue before heading out.
