The Kona storm that moved through all of the Hawaiian Islands between March 12 and 15 brought periods of intense rain and localized flooding across parts of South Maui. Some areas of Kīhei, particularly low-lying condo parking lots and sections of neighborhood streets, experienced massive flooding. Like many local residents and businesses, Kihei Rent A Car was affected and unfortunately lost more than 20 vehicles due to water damage. While challenging, we are already working to replace those vehicles and maintain service for our customers.

The encouraging news is that most of Kīhei has returned to normal operations. Primary routes including South Kihei Road and Piʻilani Highway are almost fully accessible. Visitors can travel throughout South Maui with minimal disruption.

Many of Kīhei’s restaurants, shops, and activity providers are open and welcoming guests. Parks and beach access areas are also reopening as county crews complete routine storm cleanup. A few condo properties are still drying out and clearing minor debris, but the majority of accommodations are operating as usual.

Maui’s community is known for its resilience, and the quick recovery following this storm reflects that spirit. Visitors arriving in Kīhei will still find the beautiful beaches, ocean views, and warm hospitality that make South Maui such a special place to explore.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and support as our community moves forward.
