If you’re looking for an authentic Hawaiian cultural experience on Maui this weekend, head to Lā ʻUlu Breadfruit Day at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens in Kahului on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
Running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., this free community celebration shines a spotlight on ʻulu, or breadfruit, and its important place in Hawaiian food, culture and agriculture. The event features presentations, food, craft vendors and entertainment, all centered around this remarkable tropical staple.
ʻUlu has been an important food throughout the Pacific for centuries. In Hawaiʻi, the tree is much more than a source of food. Maui Nui Botanical Gardens notes that ʻulu trees can begin producing fruit in just three to five years and remain productive for decades. Traditionally, an ʻulu tree planted at the birth of a child could provide food for that child’s lifetime.
Visitors can also find different ʻulu varieties for sale through Kahanu Garden and Preserve and the Breadfruit Institute, giving local growers an opportunity to bring these culturally important trees into their own landscapes.
