Kalaupapa tells the powerful story of the thousands of people who were forcibly isolated there after being diagnosed with Hansen’s disease (formerly known as leprosy). Today, the peninsula stands as a place of remembrance, resilience, and respect for the individuals and families whose lives were forever changed.
Tours are offered on Thursdays and Saturdays and include an all-day guided hike down the famous Kalaupapa Pali Trail. Participants should be prepared for a strenuous adventure, hiking approximately 8 miles with a 1,700-foot elevation change. Visitors must be at least 16 years old, and reservations are required in advance.
