If you’re planning a Road to Hāna adventure this week in your rental from Kihei Rent A Car, it’s a good idea to allow extra travel time and pack a little extra patience alongside the banana bread and sunscreen.
The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation has announced intermittent traffic holds on Hāna Highway at Maliko Gulch near mile marker 10 for emergency rock removal work. Crews will be working from Monday, May 18 through Friday, May 22, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. During this time, both lanes may briefly close for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time while rocks and debris are safely cleared from the roadway.
While delays are expected, the Road to Hāna remains one of Maui’s most unforgettable drives, filled with waterfalls, jungle views, ocean cliffs, and tiny roadside fruit stands that feel like treasure chests tucked into the rainforest.
Our best tip? Start early, drive carefully, and embrace “Maui time.” Sometimes the journey slows down so the island can remind us to actually look around.
