Planning to explore the legendary Road to Hāna? There’s a small plot twist waiting on the far, rugged side of paradise.

The County of Maui has temporarily closed a section of Hāna Highway at Kālepa Point (mile markers 38–39) on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. while crews complete critical safety improvements. This project focuses on stabilizing steep terrain and installing new rockfall protection, helping keep this remote stretch safer for future travel.

Here’s what that means for your adventure: Most visitors can still fully enjoy the classic Road to Hāna experience, including waterfalls, lush jungle views, and the unforgettable Kīpahulu area of Haleakalā National Park. However, if you were dreaming of completing the full loop around East Maui, you’ll need to adjust your plans during weekday closure hours and return the way you came.

Now for an important Kihei Rent A Car note: The “backside” of Maui is a wild, rugged, and partly unpaved stretch of road. Because  of these conditions, we only allow our Jeeps to travel beyond Hāna to the backside. All other rental vehicles in our fleet are not permitted on that portion of the island.

Even outside of the temporary closure, this policy helps protect both you and the vehicle on terrain that can shift from scenic to spicy very quickly.

So here’s the smoothest game plan: Enjoy the Road to Hāna at your own pace, soak in the views, explore waterfalls, and if you’re not in a Jeep, plan a relaxed return through Hāna. If you are in one of our Jeeps, you’ll be properly equipped for that more adventurous route when conditions allow.
