If you’re looking for a fun way to experience a different side of Maui, take a scenic drive into Upcountry for Kēōkea Hoʻolauleʻa on Saturday, August 29.
Held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kēōkea Marketplace, this community celebration brings together Hawaiian music, local food, crafts, plants, cultural activities and plenty of family fun. Admission is a $5 donation for adults 18 and older, while children can attend free.
Music is a big part of the day. Performers include Maui vocalist and guitarist Nāmaka Cosma, accompanied by slack-key guitarist Sean Parks, along with Ke Ola Hou, the Aua Le Fefe keiki fire-dance group and the Nevah Too Late trio.
Food lovers will want to arrive early for Aunty Robin’s popular pastele-stew plate lunch. More than 20 local vendors are expected, offering everything from garlic noodles and Maui bowls to lumpia, jewelry, crafts and other locally made treasures.
The celebration also offers visitors an opportunity to participate in Hawaiian cultural traditions. Workshops include hulu featherwork, lauhala weaving and kuʻi kalo, or poi pounding. Keiki activities and a dwarf-goat petting zoo add even more fun for families.
Kēōkea Hoʻolauleʻa is located around Mile 17 of Kula Highway at Kaʻamana Street, about a quarter-mile past Grandma’s Coffee House.
