Hawaii is sowing new roots in local agriculture and Kihei travelers can taste the change soon!
Mahi Pono, a major farming operation on Maui, has just announced its first commercial harvest of Hawaii-grown mandarin oranges grown on the fertile slopes of Haleakala. This marks a milestone in efforts to boost local food production and reduce Hawaii’s reliance on imported fruit.
Most citrus available in the islands has traditionally been shipped in from the mainland. These sweet mandarins won’t just be delicious — they’re part of a broader vision to strengthen Hawaii’s food security, create local jobs, and support sustainable farming practices right here at home.

The first batch of mandarins will be available in limited quantities next month under the Maui Harvest brand, including at select local retailers on Maui, the Big Island, and Oahu. A portion of the harvest will also be donated to schools across the state — a sweet treat for keiki!

For visitors cruising Maui in one of our rental cars, keep an eye out for these juicy gems at local markets — they’re a taste of homegrown Hawaii you won’t want to miss!
