If you thought only humans know how to snag the best beach real estate, think again! Recently on Maui’s North Shore a curious Hawaiian monk seal decided that your beach chairs make great shade and settled right in under someone’s setup at Baby Beach near Wawau Point. The lucky beachgoers found their chairs cordoned off while responders made sure our flippered friend stayed safe and comfortable.

This isn’t just a fun story to make you smile — it’s also a gentle reminder about sharing the sand with one of Hawaii’s most treasured residents. Hawaiian monk seals are one of the most endangered marine mammals on the planet and are strictly protected under federal and state laws.

These chunky, charming seals sometimes haul out on beaches to rest, and we’re lucky when we see them. If you spot one during your travels, give them plenty of space (at least 50 feet, even more for moms with pups) and enjoy the moment from afar.
