The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is expanding essential rock scaling safety work to a new location at mile marker 19.5 near Wailua Valley State Wayside Park. Starting Monday, March 2, crews will be removing loose rocks and debris from the cliffs above the road to keep this beautiful but rugged highway safe for all drivers.
What this means for your drive:
- Intermittent road closures will occur weekdays from about 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at mile marker 19.5.
- Traffic may be held in both directions for roughly 15–20 minutes while work zones clear.
- This work is expected to last about a month, weather permitting.
This site is in addition to other rock scaling zones already underway closer toward mile marker 14.9, where similar intermittent closures have been happening.

💡 Travel tip: If you’re headed toward Hāna or making stops along the way, consider giving yourself extra time and packing some snacks and water.
The Hāna Highway is one of Maui’s best drives, but its winding nature means safety work like this helps keep everyone cruising smoothly.
Drive safe and enjoy the lush wonders of East Maui!
